Edge® Cladding
Edge Vertical Joint (VJ) Cladding is the modern evolution of traditional tongue and groove timber wall boards that have been used for centuries. The original vertical joint boards featured a tongue on one side and a groove on the other, allowing them to slot together seamlessly, creating a neat V-shaped joint. Historically, these timber boards were only 100mm wide, making installation time-consuming and prone to issues like swelling, shrinking, and joint cracking.
Today, vertical grooved panels have replaced the old-style vertical joint boards, offering the same aesthetic but with far more efficiency. Instead of narrow boards, 3-meter-high and 1200mm-wide panels are now available, significantly speeding up installation. Additionally, durable fibre cement has replaced timber, making it suitable for both internal and external applications.
Cemintel Edge Cladding builds on the classic VJ look with various groove spacings that cater to more contemporary designs. The smooth texture and sharp, clean lines of Edge VJ panels complement modern styles like minimalist, farmhouse, Scandi, and Japandi.

Key Features
Unlike VJ timber, Edge VJ panels resist cracking, swelling and warping.
Made from Cemintel's advanced fibre cement the cladding is resistant to rot, termites and permanent water damage.
The ship-lap joints on the long edges take up building movement and avoid joint cracking.
Panels can be gun-nailed to timber frames and come pre-primed and ready for paint to speed up installation.
Product Technical Information
Edge Bond Cladding Panels have V-shaped grooves at narrow 75 mm intervals. 1200mm wide sheets have 16 V grooves.
Edge Oxford Cladding Panels have V-shaped grooves at 150 mm intervals. 1200 mm wide sheets have 8 V grooves.
Edge Ribbon Cladding Panels have U-shaped grooves at 150mm intervals. 1200 mm wide sheets have 8 U grooves.
Edge Crown Cladding Panels have V-shaped grooves at extra wide 400mm intervals. 1200 mm wide sheets have just 3 V grooves.

Product Information
It’s easy to see why Vertical Joint (VJ) Cladding remains a popular choice in Australia. Homeowners and designers appreciate its clean aesthetic and flexibility, with four different groove spacing options to choose from. The subtle grooves add visual interest and a touch of craftsmanship, making it suitable for a range of styles—from classic Hamptons interiors to sleek, minimalist exteriors.
VJ cladding is especially effective when used as a contemporary contrast in heritage home extensions. While the original home might feature pitched roofs and decorative details, a modern addition can use boxy forms with vertical joint cladding, finished in dark grey for a sophisticated contrast.
Cemintel Edge Cladding is not only visually appealing but also impact-resistant, making it an excellent option for internal feature walls. Full-height panels create striking floor-to-ceiling designs, while cutting them down to chair height and pairing with a dado rail adds a classic touch to living areas and hallways.
Another growing trend is using fibre cement VJ sheets in wet areas like bathrooms, laundries, and powder rooms as an alternative to tiles. While suitable for most wet areas, they aren’t recommended for shower recesses, which require waterproofing.
VJ cladding has become a versatile building material for adding detail to eaves, soffits, and vaulted ceilings. The shiplap joints align with the vertical grooves, creating a seamless, continuous finish that hides panel joins.
For builders, the large panels, available in common wall heights and featuring convenient shiplap joints, save significant time—particularly in new builds. Being made from fibre cement, the panels are durable, impact-resistant, and flexible enough to absorb building movement, reducing the risk of cracks. They also hold paint well, resisting warping and cracking, ensuring they maintain their appearance for years to come.

Installation
Edge Cladding sheets are 9mm thick and 1200mm wide, designed to fit standard 600mm stud spacing. Available in lengths of 2450mm, 2750mm, and 3000mm to suit common wall heights, they reduce the need for excessive cuts, resulting in less waste. The sheets can be fixed directly to stud frames using either hand or gun-nailing for timber, or screwed to light-gauge steel frames. Cavity fixing to timber or fibre cement battens is also an option.
Edge Cladding panels can be installed horizontally to achieve a different shiplap effect. However, this can create a challenge at the short ends where panels butt together, leaving a visible join. A common solution is to cover these joints with vertical battens for a more cohesive look.
The Cemintel fibre cement used in Edge Cladding meets the requirements for non-combustible materials as specified in the National Construction Code (NCC) Volume One, Clause C2D1 Deemed-to-Satisfy Provisions (6)(d).
Edge VJ Cladding panels are also suitable for Bushfire Attack Levels (BAL) up to BAL-29 when installed in compliance with Australian Standard AS3959. For higher-risk zones, external walls can be upgraded to BAL-FZ when part of a fire-rated plasterboard wall system.
